York Diocesan Board of Education

Do you want to make a positive impact in the lives of young people? Are you committed to making a difference in your local community?

Could you be a Foundation Governor in a Church of England school?

The York Diocesan Board of Education is delighted to partner with Inspiring Governance, to aid with recruitment of foundation governors across the 120+ Church of England schools we support.

Our vision for our schools is one of flourishing Church school communities, committed to providing education of the highest quality that is deeply Christian and seeks to serve the common good for their own locality. The role of foundation governor is a key role in supporting the flourishing of a Church school.

The role

As a foundation governor you will carry out the same strategic role as any other governor, but alongside your fellow foundation governors you will also have a special responsibility to support your school’s Christian foundation, for example by encouraging debate in key areas, including the school’s Christian vision, collective worship and religious education. Further information on the role can be found here

As a foundation governor, you will have a fulfilling role which enables you to use and develop your skills and experiences while making a real difference. Here’s what some of our foundation governors say:

“I love that I get to meet with the children to hear their views and join in with collective worship, as well as helping to shape the wider work of the school. It’s a real privilege to be able to see our children flourish!”

“Being a foundation governor, has and continues to be a source of inspiration and motivation.  I enjoy working within a professional team, making a difference to our whole school community.”

“The saying, “You get more out of something, the more you put into it” certainly became true as my role established and grew.”

“I feel appreciated and my knowledge has grown, with the help of the school, training and support.”

Whilst many foundation governors are actively involved in their local Church communities, we recognise that there are individuals who don’t fit this profile who make excellent foundation governors. We are keen to ensure that there are people with diverse skills, experiences and backgrounds around the table. What is important is a commitment to uphold the school’s Christian ethos and vision and making an effective contribution to the governance and success of the school, both generally and specifically as a Church school.
