Why did you decide to become a governor?
What can be more important than ensuring our children receive the best available care and education to enable them to achieve their best in life? I became a school governor because I wanted to support my daughter’s school and felt strongly about the school’s excellent vision.
I have met some amazing people and made some good friends from a wonderful community. Most importantly, I have been able to make a difference and support the school.
What characteristics do you think governors need?
To be a school governor or trustee I think you need the ability to see the bigger picture, provide strategic direction and bring together opposing views. Being part of a governing board means supporting school leaders, monitoring progress and caring about every pupil.
Have there been any benefits for you personally?
The training I have received has been excellent and the skills are transferable. I have been able to use my knowledge and experiences from school to other walks of life. For example, in child protection and safeguarding. It has also opened my eyes to another world.
What advice would you give to new governors?
Go on as much accredited training as possible. Don’t take your own agenda to meetings. The work of school governors is to promote the education and wellbeing of all the pupils and staff, not just your own child.
