Why Govern in a Hackney School?

Governors play a crucial role, offering support and challenge so that school leaders create exceptional outcomes and change the life chances for all our children in Hackney, particularly those who are most vulnerable and disadvantaged. Sign-up here and make a difference.

All governance boards, no matter what type of school or how many schools they govern, have three core functions:

Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction;

Holding executive leaders to account for the educational performance of the organisation and its pupils, and the effective and efficient performance management of staff; and

Overseeing the financial performance of the organisation and making sure its money is well spent.

Hearing the voices of stakeholders (parents and others) is also crucial to the function of governance, particularly to enable good decision making.

The financial value of strong governance has an estimated value of £40k per school. The social value of this public role is immeasurable.

What’s in it for you?

As a school governor, you will be able to make a worthwhile difference to shape an inclusive education system in our Hackney community. By influencing, supporting and contributing to strategic and ethical decision making, you will be helping to bring about improvements that benefit all children at your school.

Why You?

Hackney schools recognise that having people who offer a balance of knowledge, skills, perspectives and experience, creates diverse boards that thrive. They enrich a culture for equality and diversity, and avoid ‘group think’. Seeing governors/trustees from ethnic minorities provides role models for young people, as well as a connectedness between the school and its community to supports all stakeholders in feeling valued.
